Fatboy Slim: A chat with an electronic music icon during his visit to L’Abarset

23 September 2025

Fatboy Slim, one of the most iconic names in electronic music, returns to L'Abarset to share not only his music, but also his views on the industry, fame, and the secret to a career that continues to thrive after more than three decades.

With an unmistakable style that blends energy, humour, and controlled chaos, Norman Cook has constantly reinvented himself without losing his authenticity. From era-defining anthems like "Right Here, Right Now" and "Praise You" to his explosive sets in front of packed crowds, Fatboy Slim continues to prove why he's a living electronic legend.

Neither inside nor outside, everywhere

On his second visit to L'Abarset, the British DJ shares his enthusiasm for a space that, he says, is unlike any other. "It's an exciting, different show, where anything can happen... and I hope it does," he confesses. Neither inside nor outside, neither indoors nor outdoors, but in that middle ground that fascinates him: a perfect blend that makes each performance unique.

The secret to a long career

To talk about his career is to talk about permanence. For him, the key is simplicity: "If you have very few words in a song that can mean many things..." That must be one of the secrets to longevity: being able to resonate with everyone even as the years go by. "That way, songs can be about a couple, a friendship, or even your football team."

The digital revolution and its impact on electronic music

Digitalisation has changed the way music we listen to and share music, and my career is a clear example. "I'm very grateful because it's kept my career alive. I haven't released any great albums in over ten years, but the digital presence has kept everything moving. I am proud and very grateful for that,” he acknowledges.

Is fame a bad lover? Between illusion and reality

When asked about fame, he responds without hesitation: don't take it too seriously. "My way of dealing with it is not to give it more importance than it deserves. I don't take myself or my ego too seriously, and that helps a lot. I'm not complaining about fame or celebrity status, it's actually quite fun... as long as you don't actually believe it."
